The Walls of Jericho stand as a testament to ancient human civilization’s advancement in building fortified structures for protection.

Located in the ancient city of Jericho, one of the world’s oldest inhabited cities, these walls were erected around 8000 BC during the Neolithic era.

Stretching several meters in height, these fortifications encompassed the city. The walls were complemented by a towering watchtower, roughly 28 feet tall, which offered a vantage point to monitor incoming threats and helped safeguard the city’s vital resources, including its freshwater sources. The presence of this watchtower not only provided strategic advantage but also symbolized the importance of the settlement it guarded.

The purpose behind the construction of these walls was predominantly defensive. While tools and weapons had been used for hunting for millennia, the Walls of Jericho are significant because they represent one of the earliest known man-made structures explicitly built for military defense.
