  • Captain James Cook was made post-captain in the Royal Navy after his second voyage (1772-1775).
  • After his second voyage, he was made a fellow of the Royal Society.
  • For his outstanding contributions to science and exploration, he received the Copley Gold Medal from the Royal Society. He was praised for not losing any of his crew members to scurvy on his second voyage.
  • Such was his acclaim that the British House of Lords gave him the epithet “First Navigator in Europe”.
  • Captain Cook is credited with naming the Possession Island in the Torres Strait Islands group near the coast of northern Queensland, Australia.
  • His published journals after his return from the first and second voyages received tremendous acclaim from the scientific community.
