Anubis, a central deity in ancient Egyptian religion, is renowned as the protector of the dead and overseer of mummification.
With a human body and a jackal’s head, his image likely arose from observing jackals near burial sites, linking them with death.
Entrusted with ensuring the proper preparation of bodies, Anubis played a pivotal role in the mummification process, which Egyptians deemed vital for the soul’s journey in the afterlife.
Furthering his role in the realm of death, Anubis presided over the “Weighing of the Heart” ceremony. Here, a deceased’s heart was balanced against the feather of Ma’at, symbolizing truth.
Anubis’s judgment in this ritual determined the soul’s afterlife fate: a worthy soul would find eternal peace, while a sinful one faced Ammit, a fearsome devourer.
Although Osiris later overshadowed him in afterlife matters, Anubis’s influence as a guardian and guide for souls remained a consistent and revered aspect of Egyptian spirituality.
