April 23 is a literary and cultural landmark. It’s a day of both birth and death for world-famous writers, a date of heroism and spirituality, and a global celebration of books and storytelling.
Let’s explore what happened on April 23 throughout history.
1616 – William Shakespeare Dies
On April 23, 1616, William Shakespeare, widely regarded as the greatest playwright in the English language, died in Stratford-upon-Avon, England. His plays, including Hamlet, Macbeth, Othello, and Romeo and Juliet, have shaped drama and literature for centuries.
Fittingly, April 23 is also celebrated as World Book Day by UNESCO, in part because it is believed to be both Shakespeare’s date of birth and death.
1920 – The Grand National Assembly of Turkey Is Founded
On this day in 1920, Turkish nationalist leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk convened the Grand National Assembly in Ankara. This moment marked the foundation of modern Turkey and a major step toward the abolition of the Ottoman Empire.

1985 – Coca-Cola Introduces “New Coke”
In a major marketing misstep, Coca-Cola replaced its original formula with “New Coke” on April 23, 1985, after taste tests suggested it was preferred over the classic version.
Public backlash was swift and fierce, and just 79 days later, the company reintroduced the original as “Coca-Cola Classic.” The debacle remains one of the most famous branding lessons in history.
1990 – Namibia Joins the United Nations
After achieving independence from South African rule in March 1990, Namibia officially joined the United Nations on April 23, becoming the 160th member state of the international body.
Namibia’s peaceful transition to independence was seen as a diplomatic success after decades of conflict and apartheid-era control.
