1945 – U.S. Troops Liberate Buchenwald Concentration Camp
On this day in 1945, American forces liberated the Buchenwald concentration camp near Weimar, Germany. One of the first and largest camps on German soil, Buchenwald held more than 250,000 prisoners throughout its existence. The liberation exposed the world to Nazi atrocities and fueled the global movement for justice and remembrance.
1961 – Nazi War Criminal Adolf Eichmann Goes on Trial in Israel
On April 11, 1961, Adolf Eichmann, one of the chief architects of the Holocaust, stood trial in Jerusalem. Captured by Israeli agents in Argentina, his televised trial brought Holocaust testimony into living rooms across the world. He was later convicted and executed in 1962—the only civil execution ever carried out by Israel.
1968 – President Lyndon B. Johnson Signs the Civil Rights Act of 1968
Just a week after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., President Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1968 into law. Also known as the Fair Housing Act, it banned discrimination in the sale, rental, and financing of housing based on race, religion, national origin, or sex.
1970 – Apollo 13 Launches Into Space
NASA launched Apollo 13 on April 11, 1970, from Kennedy Space Center. The mission was intended to land on the Moon, but an onboard explosion two days later forced the crew to abort. Their safe return became a testament to ingenuity and teamwork, famously summed up by the words: “Houston, we’ve had a problem.”
2006 – Iranian President Announces Nuclear Progress
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad declared that Iran had successfully enriched uranium for the first time on April 11, 2006. The announcement triggered international concern and escalated tensions over Iran’s nuclear ambitions in the 21st century.
