In his lifetime (c. 630 BCE – c. 560 BCE), Solon was able to accomplish a lot of outstanding things. Some of his major accomplishments are as follows:

  • Also known as the first poet in Athens, Solon deployed his poems as an instrument for change in Greek society. His poems raised awareness of the extreme poverty among classes other than the elites.
  • Solon is revered as an important member of the Seven Wise Men that Greeks. Those men were considered very influential in shaping people’s political and social thoughts.
  • Solon of Athens was an intellectually and politically influential poet and statesman in the 6th His constitutional, judicial and economic reforms were aimed at putting back the Greek virtue of moderation into the hearts and minds of the people of Attica. By so doing, those reforms were credited with ending extreme poverty in the Greek city-state.
  • Solon’s name appears on the list of Seven Wise Men of Greece. The list, which was drawn up around the late 5th century BCE, would see a number of changes as later writers and philosophers updated the list. In some eras, the list had 10 men, while in other eras, it had up to 17 or 20 men. Regardless of those changes, Solon’s name always made it on the list. This is testament to just how influential and popular Solon of Athens was to Greek society.
